Albert999about 2 years agoCaring for rough sleepers
I love that Manurewa has so many caring people. Homeless people are part of our community too. It must be tough sleeping rough and insecure. I'd like us through Council to provide basic stuff you need like a safe place to shower and to store a few things. Other parts of NZ and even Auckland can so we can too. Yes maintenance will be required but thats all part of building respectful, enabling community. I'm not homeless but I know any of us including kids can trip up and find ourselves out of luck. Lets make difficult times a bit easier and safer for whomever.

We should be activating spaces in our community that are underutilised. I am all for edible walkways (fruit forests) and getting family BBQs and play areas in our parks and reserves. I think that lighting is a huge issue when it comes to using our local parks and reserves. Art installations that illuminate would help to make these areas safer and would provide opportunities for education around the local history of our rohe

COVID-19 has changed the volunteering landscape. The likely scenario for NGOs reliant on volunteers will be a short fall of people unable to volunteer as in pre-COVID days. With seniors [over 65yrs] being the back bone of many of our volunteer activities in the community now unable [unwilling through health fears?] to undertake their usual roles, this will leave a big gap in the ability of NGOs to deliver services at pre-COVID levels. An increasing number of people will also be subsisting on a much reduced income will be accessing community services in larger numbers and the community groups stepping up to support them will need additional people to support the delivery of those needs – these are generally volunteers. The increasing numbers of unemployed people will also be looking to contribute, retrain and wanting to ensure their own good mental health will need support in sourcing community voluntary activities that will best meet their needs. We need to support our community organisations to relook at their volunteer involving programmes and practices, how they recruit, support, identify and allocate voluntary tasks, ensuring the health and wellbeing of both the recipients and the volunteers. Volunteering Auckland is well placed to support the volunteering needs of both the person looking to contribute and those community groups needing support in their volunteer engagement processes and practices. Our database can also track referrals to needs by suburb and by local board. We are able to operate regionally and virtually. Volunteering will increasingly become a way to ensure a resilient community.

Having more outdoor basketball courts that Manurewa's young people can use would be a great investment for our communities. Here's why: - Basketball is hugely popular - according to the School Sport NZ Representation Census 2019* it is now the second most popular sport in New Zealand after Netball, passing Rugby. - Studies also show that community courts can foster positive social engagement and lower crime.** - Manurewa Local Board area has many playgrounds for children but not many outdoor courts for teens outside school hours or adults. Even smaller or half-courts would be good. Potential locations could be Weymouth Park, Wattle Farm Reserve, Gallaher Park or others. * http://www.nzsssc.org.nz/School-Sport-NZ-Census-Data/School-Sport-NZ-Census-Reports ** https://nz.basketball/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/BBNZ-Outdoor-Facility-Guide.pdf (p. 32)
