Waitematā Local Parks Management Plan
About Waitematā parks and reserves
The Waitematā Local Board has decision-making authority for about 102 parks in the area. These include 13 reserves with seven existing reserve management plans.
About the Waitematā Local Parks Management Plan Project
Waitematā Local Board is developing a local park management plan as required under Section 41 of the Reserves Act 1977.
This plan will outline how we will manage, use, protect and develop Waitematā’s local parks over next 10 years. It will cover all local parks and reserves in the area that come under the Reserves Act 1977 and the Local Government Act 2002.
The plan will:
help the local board make decisions about how we use and protect our parks
- outline what we need to consider when we develop and improve our parks
- consider what local community members say they need and would like for their local parks.
Once adopted, the plan will replace all existing reserve management plans for parks in the Waitematā area.
The Waitematā Local Parks Management Plan will have two volumes:
- Volume 1 will:
- set out the focus and purpose of the plan
- provide a structure to guide how we manage the parks
- Volume 2 will provide more detail about what the plan will involve for each park in the Waitematā area.
Why we ask for your feedback
The Reserves Act 1977 sets out the process for park management plans. Part of this process requires us to ask for community feedback as we prepare the plan.
We do this through two rounds of public consultations.
This is the first consultation for the plan. We want to know your views about parks in Waitematā to help us draft a proposal for how we manage parks in this area.
We expect to run the second consultation in mid-2026. This is when we will ask for your feedback about our draft plan.
What we want your feedback on
We want to make sure our plan reflects:
- what communities value about their local parks
- how people would like to use and enjoy parks in the future.
