Rossover 3 years agoAdvocate for safe routes to schools
Approximately 15% of our morning and evening traffic congestion is parents collecting their kids from schools. This could be easily resolved if we went back to kids walking and cycling to school. The Ministry of Transport's 25 Years of Travel study in 2015 showed that 42 per cent of school journeys by primary school pupils were made on foot in the late 1980s. By 2014 that had fallen to 29 per cent. Cycling fell from 12 per cent of journeys to fewer than 5 per cent. OLB needs to advocate hard for AT to install safe walking and cycling routes linking schools to their catchments. The schools along Remuera Road, for example, have no safe way to cycle to them. The OLB can support this by budgeting for links through reserves to AT routes. The OLB can also work with local schools to encourage 'cycling school buses', bike storage on site etc., and by representing the schools interests with AT. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12080407

We need more off leash areas for dogs not less. There are so very few decent areas within Auckland that we can take our dogs to as it, where they get to be dogs and play and interact. I strongly request you make more off leash spaces not less. My young dog has been going there since he was a puppy and it was crucial to his development to have this socialisation. I'm also a terminally ill cancer patient so having this beautiful off leash paradise close to me is crucial. There are so many other parks in the surrounding area that people can go to for a picnic. I emplore you to do the right thing here and at the very least maintain the current off leash areas. Ideally, all of the park with the exception of the carpark, wetlands and children's playground should all be off leash. Having a designated beach we could access during the day would be amazing too!

The Board's recent move to reduce the offleash areas of Waiatarua Reserve in the Enhancement Plan was a big mistake. The Reserve should retain all current off leash amenity and the silly suggestion to carve off a segment of this wonderful facility enjoyed by dog owners from all over Auckland and make it on leash should be abandoned and the Enhancement Plan amended. Orakei lacks a designated dog park. Waiatarua is the perfect Reserve for this and that is the sort of idea the Board should work on.

We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful park so close for all the family, children and pets alike! Please don’t reduce the already limited off-leash areas we have to walk together as a family. Especially in summer where the beaches are basically a no go and most other parks only allow on leash- Off leash areas are so important to let energetic dogs blow off steam and play with other four legged friends!
0 comment9Lynnover 3 years agoTraffic safety upgrades
It is an ongoing problem on Pukerangi drive that the road markings have not been installed in the correct place leading to ongoing issues with cars having to cross the centre line into oncoming traffic to get around parked cars. The addition of the apartment block at the corner of Pukerangi and Arthur streets has exacerbated this issue as cars now park right along the south side of Pukerangi Cresent. In order to access Ladies mile from Pukerangi you have to Cross over into oncoming traffic on a blind corner as the medium strip line is in the wrong place. This is a real safety issue that needs to be urgently addressed. The main reason this is a problem is that parking has been allowed on the wrong side of a curved road which includes a blind rise, corner and intersection. The best solution would be to change the parking over to the north side of Pukerangi Cresent therefore giving much better and therefore safer lines of sight along this road and also for traffic turning out of Arthur Street into Pukerangi. At present there is NO line of sight and you basically have to floor it. Not a great idea. If the parking was on the other side the whole curve would be visible and the intersection much safer. This has been an ongoing issue for years and needs to be dealt with before someone gets seriously injured.
