Adrienabout 4 years agoSet up a road space rationing system
Push people to carpool or use public transport. Many big cities have already moved to this solution in order to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.

For those of us living and working in the city, the only green space we have access to on the way to/from work is Victoria park or similar. With the high volume of polluting cars on the surrounding streets, walking through these parks is the only respite our lungs have from the poor air quality in the city. Diesel leaf blowers make that morning walk a breathing inferno. You should encourage low carbon practices with your contractors.

I would like to plead for a footpath from the bottom of Grafton Road across the Wellesley Street over-bridge into town. For those coming from the Hospital area you have to take the longer and hilly options of up to Grafton Bridge or up through the University. The city is right there...but we have to take longer more difficult routes. But while we are at it, the slip roads are a nightmare for pedestrians especially from Wellesley street left into Grafton/Stanley Street. A connection to the Grafton cycleway and up to Symonds street from there would be great additions to the footpath too, but happy to start with a simple footpath. One would fit on the Northern side.

Close CBD to traffic. Only electric buses or remove buses. Expand footpaths, add bike lanes. No crosstown traffic. Start with the blocks around Britomart and Queen St and grow from there. Remove cars from shared spaces. This has been done really well in Ljubljana. They have free electric golf carts for the mobility impaired to get people where they needed to go.

Asphalt, those yellow plastic ramps, sandbags. Anything is better than the current state and can be done for cheap.
