Katiedobsonabout 4 years agoI would love to see a community pool out in Hobsonville point. Could one of the historic buildings be transformed into a pool.
0 comment0Kyle Parkerabout 4 years agoLocal jobs: Community Recycling and Resource Recovery Centre
Less waste in our environment, businesses & households save money. Youth are proud of their neighbourhood and look after it. The local communities of Upper Harbour deserve to get the benefits of being part of Auckland Council's Resource Recovery Network and helping Auckland Council meet it's targets. Auckland Council defines Community Recycling Centres as facilities where residents can drop off unwanted goods which are then sold for reuse and recycling, creating income that supports local jobs, training and volunteering opportunities but the idea is much bigger than that. Local benefits include creation of local paid jobs with shorter commutes, meaningful volunteering opportunities, tidier neighbourhoods with less litter and graffiti, youth training opportunities, less wasted resources, an opportunity for mature people to pass important practical skills down to younger people, more local options for recycling difficult items, support for people with disabilities or mental health challenges, Lower rubbish disposal costs for local businesses and households, community activation, fewer resources are wasted and the landfill lasts longer before it fills up and we need a new one, climate benefits, potential carbon credits, etc. The model is not new for NZ, it has been proven by pioneering organisations such as Wanaka Wastebusters, CBEC - Community Business & Environment Centre (Kaitaia), Xtreme Zero Waste (Raglan) over the last 20-30 years. In Auckland we already have Community Recycling Facilities at Whangaparaoa, Devonport, Helensville, Waiuku, Waitakere, Waiheke, and Great Barrier. "While still new, these CRCs are already delivering beyond expectations, diverting 60 – 70 per cent (by weight) of materials entering their sites from landfill and creating over 50 full and part time jobs. As the centres become more established, they will offer more resource recovery options to residents, diverting more material from landfill and creating vibrant community hubs." (Auckland Council WMMP 2018, p41). Auckland Council has 7 other sites planned over the next few years, (none on the North Shore due to funding constraints). At Sustain & Enable, as a local Community Enterprise (see: www.se.org.nz), we think it's high time interested locals got together with our Local Boards and proved we can produce these benefits for our local communities too. Auckland Council's Waste Management and Minimisation Plan Vision: "Auckland aspires to be Zero Waste by 2040, taking care of people and the environment, and turning waste into resources." Upgrade the trail that runs betweem Wharf Rd and Kinleith way for cyclists and walkers. Those trails haven't had any attention for some time. Upgraded signage would also be helpful. These trails provide beautiful views of Lucas Creek & they are not much used.
0 comment0HobsonvilleCommunityTrustabout 4 years agoPlayground, shady trees, BBQ, seating area & water fountain at Observation Green, Scott Point
Observation Green is the only current real open space in Scott Point which is a rapidly growing and soon to be very large new community. It desperately needs some shady trees, BBQ, seating, water fountain and playground as this is a key central gathering point for Scott Point but there's nothing there

The traffic around the business area is crazy, so more and more people are walking, catching public transport, cycling and using scooters (including e-scooters). The problem is the footpaths are narrow, have sections missing and have been neglected. I see this being important as Rosedale Bus Station is due to be built soon and it could bring more workers/customers in via public transport.
