This consultation closed on 14 August 2020. Thanks for having your say.

We received 115 submissions.

We also asked for feedback from organisations and groups who will use and operate in the future town square.

Key feedback themes

Events

A number of people asked if the space was large enough to hold events and if the space would be serviced for events.

Markets

The majority of feedback on the markets was positive and people wanted it to continue.

Connections / sightlines

A few people, including the potential development partner, said the connection to Shore City and Potters Park could be improved.

They also said that sightlines to the beach would ideally be clearer.

Water feature / seating / other elements

People wanted to know:

  • what type of water feature would be included
  • how it would look
  • how cleanliness and safety would be handled.

We also received a number of positive comments about including a water feature, however people felt strongly that it shouldn't be a fountain style.

Greenery / shade

A lot of people said that the town square needed more trees and grass.

Other

We received a significant number of comments on:

  • the change of land use
  • surrounding development
  • car parking
  • size of the town square.

Stakeholder workshops

Overall our stakeholders were very positive about the concept design for the Takapuna town square.

They provided some useful detailed feedback about design elements that we will consider as we progress into detailed design.

These include:

  • signage for events
  • accessible toilets
  • shading
  • management of events and markets
  • types of seating.

Changes made as a result of feedback

We have refined the town square design to address the feedback we received.

We have also refined the boundaries of the town square to address comments made during:

  • the consultation
  • stakeholder meetings
  • discussions with the potential development partner.

This will:

  • align the space on Lake Road with the Shore City Shopping Centre
  • improve the sightline to Hurstmere Road
  • increase the space to Potters Park.

We will also include:

  • additional planting and seats
  • a larger space for the water feature
  • bike and scooter parking.

Takapuna War Memorial

We also asked whether the Takapuna War Memorial should be moved from its current location (beside the Takapuna Library) to the new town square. We received mixed feedback about this.

Panuku has recommended that this becomes a separate project with input from Auckland Council’s civic events and parks teams together with the Returned Services Association.

What happens next

  • Following approval of the revised concept design, we will begin the consenting process and find a contractor.
  • Construction is expected to start in early-mid 2021.
