EmCal2020about 2 years agoRetaining and valuing all Trees
The RMA Tree Protection needs to be urgently reinstated! Auckland has already lost a third of the tree canopy in recent years which cannot be ignored any longer! We just can’t ignore that the planet which our city is part of, is getting warmer and with less trees getting even more so! All developments and works need to consider retaining the existing trees and be an intricate part of that plan. It is pointless just to say 'but we are replanting!'. New saplings won't grow like Jack in the Beanstalk and certainly won't do the same effective job as mature trees (exotic and natives alike!). Trees are earth’s life-support system, hosting 80% of biodiversity and stand at the front-line in reducing climate change. It is one of the most important and doable aspects of countering climate change, but all I hear is that we all need to stop driving petrol cars and use public transport (not against this!). However, the very thing that is so valuable is currently being treated like its a dispensable object! Mature trees help protect against climate impacts such as flooding. They catch rainwater, reduce erosion and create more permeable soils and prevent large volumes of water runoff. It is time to start valuing the nature we've got around us for our own survival and that of birds and other living creatures. Funding is also required for the Auckland Council Urban Ngahere forest Strategy, as I understand that currently there is none!!

I think local board can run some te reo maori course, and this encourage people to learn and explore maori culture, also improve the awareness of maori
0 comment2Stephen1about 2 years agoStop polluting the Manukau Harbour
Work with the other local boards that surround the Manukau Harbour and give greater voice to the need to clean up its waters. Insist that Council look into a deep sea pipe option to enable Watercare to pipe its wastewater outflow deep out to sea instead of into our shallow enclosed harbour. Together the local boards can have a much greater say and have our targeted rate for water actually used for the good of the Manukau Harbour for a change.
0 comment3Volunteering Aucklandabout 2 years agoVolunteering in a new "Normal" needs support
COVID-19 has changed the volunteering landscape. The likely scenario for NGOs reliant on volunteers will be a short fall of people unable to volunteer as in pre-COVID days. With seniors [over 65yrs] being the back bone of many of our volunteer activities in the community now unable [unwilling through health fears?] to undertake their usual roles, this will leave a big gap in the ability of NGOs to deliver services at pre-COVID levels. An increasing number of people will also be subsisting on a much reduced income will be accessing community services in larger numbers and the community groups stepping up to support them will need additional people to support the delivery of those needs – these are generally volunteers. The increasing numbers of unemployed people will also be looking to contribute, retrain and wanting to ensure their own good mental health will need support in sourcing community voluntary activities that will best meet their needs. We need to support our community organisations to relook at their volunteer involving programmes and practices, how they recruit, support, identify and allocate voluntary tasks, ensuring the health and wellbeing of both the recipients and the volunteers. Volunteering Auckland is well placed to support the volunteering needs of both the person looking to contribute and those community groups needing support in their volunteer engagement processes and practices. Our database can also track referrals to needs by suburb and by local board. We are able to operate regionally and virtually. Volunteering will increasingly become a way to ensure a resilient community.
