EmCal2020about 3 years agoRetaining and valuing all Trees
The RMA Tree Protection needs to be urgently reinstated! Auckland has already lost a third of the tree canopy in recent years which cannot be ignored any longer! We just can’t ignore that the planet which our city is part of, is getting warmer and with less trees getting even more so! All developments and works need to consider retaining the existing trees and be an intricate part of that plan. It is pointless just to say 'but we are replanting!'. New saplings won't grow like Jack in the Beanstalk and certainly won't do the same effective job as mature trees (exotic and natives alike!). Trees are earth’s life-support system, hosting 80% of biodiversity and stand at the front-line in reducing climate change. It is one of the most important and doable aspects of countering climate change, but all I hear is that we all need to stop driving petrol cars and use public transport (not against this!). However, the very thing that is so valuable is currently being treated like its a dispensable object! Mature trees help protect against climate impacts such as flooding. They catch rainwater, reduce erosion and create more permeable soils and prevent large volumes of water runoff. It is time to start valuing the nature we've got around us for our own survival and that of birds and other living creatures. Funding is also required for the Auckland Council Urban Ngahere forest Strategy, as I understand that currently there is none!!

I want more activities of CCET (Chinese Conservation Education Trust). For example, composting workshops, horticulture lectures, tree planting, community garden, etc. I want to learn and help.

Auckland Council's Urban Ngāhere (forest) Strategy aims for an increase to 30% canopy cover across Auckland's urban areas. However, Intensification of housing is happening at the expense of Auckland's trees. Since blanket tree protection was lifted in 2015, trees are being felled at an alarming rate. How can the community and the Puketāpapa Board work together to protect our urban trees? What about incentives to encourage developers to incorporate trees into their landscape designs? Rates rebates for homeowners with tall trees on their properties? Let's increase public awareness of the value and benefits of trees in our neighbourhoods.
