Volunteering Aucklandalmost 3 years agoVolunteering in a new "normal" needs support
COVID-19 has changed the volunteering landscape. The likely scenario for NGOs reliant on volunteers will be a short fall of people unable to volunteer as in pre-COVID days. With seniors [over 65yrs] being the back bone of many of our volunteer activities in the community now unable [unwilling through health fears?] to undertake their usual roles, this will leave a big gap in the ability of NGOs to deliver services at pre-COVID levels. An increasing number of people will also be subsisting on a much reduced income will be accessing community services in larger numbers and the community groups stepping up to support them will need additional people to support the delivery of those needs – these are generally volunteers. The increasing numbers of unemployed people will also be looking to contribute, retrain and wanting to ensure their own good mental health will need support in sourcing community voluntary activities that will best meet their needs. We need to support our community organisations to relook at their volunteer involving programmes and practices, how they recruit, support, identify and allocate voluntary tasks, ensuring the health and wellbeing of both the recipients and the volunteers. Volunteering Auckland is well placed to support the volunteering needs of both the person looking to contribute and those community groups needing support in their volunteer engagement processes and practices. Our database can also track referrals to needs by suburb and by local board. We are able to operate regionally and virtually. Volunteering will increasingly become a way to ensure a resilient community.

There's a lot of illegal dumping outside the Transpower power lines, Kainga Ora and new apartment construction sites, and because there are "private land" no one cares and it just piles up. As residents we have seen enough.

In conjunction with Mangere Bridge, how about a sculpture trail from Ambury Farm along Kiwi Esplanade, and along the Onehunga waterfront at Taumanu Reserve and across the bridge to Te Tauranga (Onehunga Lagoon). This could be for a month each year and coincide with the Onehunga Festival.
1 comment1Stephen1about 3 years agoTarget illegal dumping
Onehunga has seen an upsurge in illegal dumping. Make this a priority area for Auckland Council. Give people options on where they can dump their rubbish legally, and go the offenders, make examples of them on social media, and show the public illegal dumping is unacceptable.
1 comment3Stephen1about 3 years agoDevelop a Manukau harbour museum, education and cultural centre at the Port.
The Manukau has an incredible amount of history from early Maori settlement to the land wars through to present day. The centre would house exhibits about the Manukau, its history, people, the land wars, the port, and other aspects of the Manukau and its surrounds. It would be a centre where students could go and learn about the history, a place where Maori boat building and carving could be taught and demonstrated. It could be a place to house and exhibit the recent rediscovered and recovered 153-year-old Daring shipwreck. The Maori canoe, Te Toki a Tapiri, housed currently in the Auckland Museum could be returned and exhibited here, from where it was taken. Information on the Orpheus shipwreck could be exhibited here. Information on the land reclamations could be exhibited here, including the history of the Mangere treatment plant. The Local Board could be progressing this idea with the Maritime Museum, Auckland Museum, Panuku, Iwi and other interested parties so that this is included in the Port of Onehunga redevelopment plans.
