Stephen1over 4 years agoMore large trees at Te Tauranga
Onehunga Lagoon needs more large shade trees. Come on Council, you've declared a climate change emergency, so lets start seeing trees going in the ground. Big trees, not tiny seedlings. A line of Pohutakawa would be great along the edge of the footpath up to the pedestrian bridge, and how about so Kowhai to attract the birds. Build a green bridge for birds across to Taumanu and continue planting big trees there.

We have a number of blank walls in our business district and we know loads of artists in our community who connect into Onehunga in some way shape or form. We would love to facilitate a festival for our community whilst teaching young people how to engage with the arts more!

How about getting some large native trees planted at Taumanu Reserve. Most of the plantings are flax, grass and small shrubs. We need some large trees that attract birds. Kowhai, Pururi, Pohutukawa, etc There is on area on the bank near the footbridge that would be excellent planted out to become a small native forest rather than just unused grass.
1 comment6Stephen1over 4 years agoFocus on the Manukau Harbour
It is time Auckland Council seriously focus on the Manukau Harbour and the health of its water. All local boards need to join forces and apply pressure on Auckland Council. It is time we stop allowing Watercare to pollute this salt water environment with treated and partially treated wastewater. Pouring nutrient rich fresh water into the salt water environment is harmful to marine life and detrimental to the long term health of the harbour. Bypass events where only partially treated waste flows into the harbour is even more detrimental, making our beaches unswimmable. Together local boards need to insist that council build a deep sea pipeline to take treated wastewater out into the ocean rather than continue spilling it into the shallow fragile environment of our harbour. Council insists it is bi-cultural, well it is high time Auckland Council started living this mantra and by being bicultural adopting the Maori principles of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and arohatanga and stop destroying the mauri of our harbour, Auckland's taonga.

Volleyball and beach volleyball are fantastic social sports that appeal to a wide variety of people from different cultural backgrounds – young, old, families, youth groups etc. There are hardly any in the area and it's a growing and popular past-time. This is our chance to offer what Mission Bay offers – a variety of activities in a beautiful setting (beach volleyball is super popular at Mission Bay - we can do better than there by offering poles) Requires: - Flat space, 8m x 16m per court, plus space around. Preferably good deep sand, for beach volleyball, otherwise firm (not boggy!) grass - 2 x metal poles/wooden posts per court Everything else is BYO: net and lines.
