We nurture, look after and monitor Auckland’s natural environment, and protect it from a variety of natural and human threats. We collect and dispose of Auckland’s rubbish and recycling. We keep Aucklanders and whānau safe through our consenting, licensing, and compliance functions.
- Capital investment - 3 years: $101 million.
- Operating expenditure - 2022-2023: $510 million.
Our plan
- Investing in environmental protection – continued investment in environmental protection will be enabled with the Natural Environment Targeted Rate.
- Zero waste Auckland – we will continue our work to eliminate food scraps from our waste into the environment with the on-going roll out of our food waste service and increase the network of community recycling centres.
What we will deliver
- Community Recycling Centres (CRC).
- Closed landfill and coastal landfill remediation.
- Natural environment programme.
Challenges
- A degrading natural environment – our rapid growth is putting pressure on our environment, along with the spread of pests, weeds and diseases threatening many of our native species. Approximately two-thirds of Auckland’s local native species are under threat of extinction.
