Consultation for the playground renewal at Cairnbrae Reserve closed on 3 July 2025.

We received 19 responses through our online survey, onsite posters and social media posts.

In addition, Glamorgan Primary School student leaders took part in two in-person sessions, providing 13 more pieces of feedback.

Main feedback themes

The main feedback themes include:

• a strong preference for swinging, sliding, climbing and bouncing play equipment
• support for including a nature trail in the play space
• preference for a vibrant colour scheme
• recognition of the playground's connection to the nearby Torbay shops.

Decisions made based on the feedback

We developed two concept design options based on community feedback. These options were presented to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board on 9 September 2025.

The board agreed to approve concept design option two.

Concept design option two includes:

• a rope structure for climbing, balancing and adventure play
• a tube slide and junior slide
• a platform attached to the rope structure
• an extra swing bay for the existing basket swing
• a nature trail and wetland planting area
• a 'slalom'-shaped or zigzag path for bikes
• a play 'mouse' wheel
• a play shop front
• new line markings on the basketball court.

What happens next

We are now preparing to build the new playground.
