What is happening?

Over the next 30 years Māngere and the surrounding neighbourhoods are expected to see significant growth and change. This means there will be a lot more houses, and more people living and working in the area. We want to make sure that we plan for what the existing and new communities will need in the next 30 years.

To help support the changes that will come with more people and further development, we are seeking your feedback to find out how we should update parts of the existing Māngere-Ōtāhuhu and Ōtara-Papatoetoe area plans. Updating the area plans will help identify projects and priorities for investment to guide council's planning and decision making in the area.

What is an area plan?

An area plan is a planning framework to guide council's planning and decision making over the next 30 years. An area plan sets out long-term aspirations and identifies projects and initiatives that can help to achieve the vision for an area. This will ensure that projects and programmes are coordinated and reflect the communities’ needs and aspirations.

Area plans already exist for the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu and Ōtara-Papatoetoe local board areas. These area plans have already helped inform the planning, prioritisation, and implementation of projects in these local board areas.

What we would like your feedback on

Only some parts of these area plans are being reviewed to see if any updates are needed. The above map shows the geographic area of this review.

We would like your feedback on:

  • How you use, what you like about, and what you would like to improve in five different geographic areas?
  • How you get around the area and what would make it easier for you to get around?
  • What you like about the natural environment of the area and how it can be better cared for?
  • What is needed for young people in the area?

Updating parts of the existing area plans will provide an opportunity for the council, government, and the community to work together to make the area a better place to live, work, play and visit as the area changes and grows over the next 30 years.

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback for the area plans review for Māngere and surrounding neighbourhoods. Consultation closed on Sunday 8 November.

We received over 150 comments at our public events and on our interactive map, and over 100 responses to our surveys. Some of the most popular topics for feedback were:

    • The natural environment
    • The Māngere town centre area
    • Māngere East Village area

    What happens next?

The project team are currently analysing all the comments and survey responses and will use this feedback to propose updates to the existing area plan. We will come back to you in March 2021 for further comment and feedback on these proposed updates.
