Area Plan for Mt Roskill and neighbouring suburbs

What is happening

Over the next 30 years Mt Roskill and the neighbouring suburbs of Ōwairaka, Sandringham, Wesley, Waikōwhai, and Three Kings are expected to see significant growth and change. This means there will be a lot more houses, and more people living and working in the area. We want to make sure that we plan for what the existing and new communities will need in the next 30 years.

To support the changes that come from growth, we want to work with our communities, mana whenua, central government and local boards to develop a plan that prepares these areas for the changes that come with growth, while retaining the things of importance to the community.

What is an area plan?

An area plan is a planning framework to guide council's planning and decision making over the next 30 years. An area plan sets out long-term aspirations and identifies projects and initiatives that can help to achieve the vision for an area. This will ensure that projects and programmes are coordinated and reflect the communities’ needs and aspirations.

The area plan will:

Provide a clear and shared vision for Mt Roskill and neighbouring suburbs for the future. Currently, this area does not have a plan that provides this collective vision.

The area plan is an important guide for the community and decision-makers. It will inform decision making on priority areas for investment and actions, while recognising the special character and values of the area. However, the area plan is not a statutory planning document and cannot set rules controlling development or directly approve funding for projects.

How to take part

We are looking for your views to help develop the draft area plan this involves either coming to community events or sharing your views online.

We would like your ideas on a number of topics including:

• opportunities for improving the natural environment
• heritage, history and stories of value in your local area
• how we can recognise and celebrate cultural diversity
• how local business areas and centres can be improved
• improvement of cycleway and walkway connections to parks and open spaces

This will be your first opportunity to take part in this process. Once we have used the findings to develop a draft area plan, the intention is to run a formal public consultation process in the first half of 2021.
