Natural environment

What we are planning for our natural environment in the Annual Plan 2026/2027.

In the 2026/2027 financial year, we plan to:

  • meet our commitments set out in the Regional Pest Management Plan 2020-2030. This includes more funding for pest management like:
  • teach communities about marine biosecurity
  • do more monitoring of existing and new marine pests like caulerpa seaweed
  • provide more community recycling centres across the region that receive, collect, repair and refurbish unwanted items from the public.

How much we plan to spend on the natural environment in 2026/2027

Type of spend Amount

Operational spend:
for day-to-day running costs, like staff, maintenance and services. These include:

  • providing rubbish and recycling services
  • licencing and compliance activities like building inspections to make sure people follow the rules.

$752 million

Capital spend:
for major upgrades or to buy or build long-term assets, like:

  • community recycling centres
  • restoring natural landscapes.
