Financial overview
The Auckland Council Group’s financial strategy is set out in the Long-term Plan 2024–2034 (LTP). It aims to improve Auckland’s physical and financial resilience over the next decade. It will do this through actions to:
- reduce flood risks
- strengthen stormwater infrastructure
- progress the Auckland Future Fund to manage investments and reduce reliance on rates to fund services and activities.
We are preparing this annual plan in a more stable economic environment with lower inflation than in recent years. There are still some risks which we continue to monitor.
At the time of writing this, the council group’s financial forecast is mostly the same as we set out in the third year of our LTP.
Responding to financial changes
We will continue to review budgets to address financial risks.
At this stage, the planned rates increases and main financial plans set out for 2026/2027 are much the same as we set out in the LTP.
However, we might need to make changes to the budget if there are unexpected events like significant economic changes or weather events. This could affect:
- operating costs (day-to-day costs to keep our services and activities running)
- our planned spending on infrastructure projects
- plans for selling assets like buildings and land
- rates - as a last option.
If we did have to increase rates further, we might consider an increase for the average-value residential property of 1 to 2 percentage points more than the increase already proposed in this annual plan. This might increase our debt slightly, but it would still be within the limits we set out in the LTP.
While we have no current plans to change decisions made in the LTP, we are prepared to respond to changing circumstances and new risks.
