About Waitipu
Waitipu, previously known as the Waitākere or Te Henga Quarry, is a large parcel of land located within the Waitākere Valley.
This valley is the tribal heartland of local mana whenua iwi, Te Kawerau ā Maki, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years.
The park was an active quarry from 1947 until 2015. In fact, stone from the quarry was used to help build roads and town centres right across West-Auckland.
While the site is still closed to the public due to health and safety concerns following its use as a quarry, this land is now being restored so we can open it as a local park for our community to enjoy.
What we are proposing
We are working with the Waitākere Ranges Local Board, mana whenua, stakeholders and the local community to create a plan to improve Waitipu.
We are hoping to:
Enable safe opening of Waitipu as a local park
Develop the park to enable appropriate recreational activities
protect and improve environmental and cultural taonga (treasures).
identify key walking routes and wider connections
identify opportunities for partnerships and activation
What we want your feedback on
We would like your feedback on our draft plan. This will:
let us know if we are on the right track
help us to identify what matters most to our community
allow us to produce a final draft plan for Waitipu
allow us to prioritise when we make these improvements.
When you can have your say
You can have your say from 11 April to 13 May 2022.
