Waitākere Ranges Local Board is developing a climate action plan to organise efforts in our local board area to:
- reduce carbon emissions
- help communities to become stronger and better able to adapt to a changing climate
What we are proposing
We have developed a draft plan that identifies key projects and actions we can take as a community. These will contribute to our regional goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030, as set out in Te Tāruke ā Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan.
The ideas in the draft plan come from our 2022 engagement with:
- community members
- community organisations
- matāwaka (Māori living in the Auckland region who are not in a Mana Whenua group). This includes some organisations and individuals who are already involved in sustainable and low-carbon living projects.
What we want your feedback on
We want your views on the proposed goals and actions outlined in the draft plan.
Let us know if there is anything you think we should change and what we should prioritise.
2023 storm acknowledgement
We prepared an initial draft of the Waitākere Ranges Climate Action Plan in December 2022. This was before the severe weather events that affected many local residents in early 2023.
We then amended the draft plan to include more:
- information about adapting to climate change
- adaptation-related initiatives as high-priority projects.
Waitākere Ranges communities are still recovering from the 2023 storm events, especially those with homes that were destroyed or severely damaged.
The draft Waitākere Ranges Climate Action Plan is not a storm recovery plan.
The plan includes actions related to:
- disaster resilience planning
- adaptation-related initiatives under way such as the Shoreline Adaptation Programme.
