Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane
This consultation has closed.
Waiapu Precinct and Paynes Lane in Onehunga are undergoing a transformation in line with the Eke Panuku urban regeneration plan for this neighbourhood.
The proposed improvements focus on future-proofing the Onehunga town centre by:
- coordinating infrastructure projects
- facilitating new homes
- creating new public spaces
- improving walking connections.
Feedback from the 2020 consultation
In the 2020 community consultation, we collected feedback on key themes such as:
- improved safety
- better connectivity
- more green space
- car parking
- quality housing
- an upgraded supermarket.
Based on this feedback, we have created plans which address these themes alongside private investment such as:
- the Dress Smart retail expansion
- a proposed new and much larger supermarket which will ensure a diverse range of retail options for locals.
We have work closely with mana whenua on the design of the public spaces to celebrate mana whenua korero (the voice of the land) and history in Onehunga.
About the 2024 consultation
With the support of the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, we want you to share your views on the design for the public spaces.

Waiapu Precinct
Waiapu Precinct (between Onehunga Mall / Selwyn Street and Arthur Street / Church Street) includes plans for:
- public plazas
- green spaces
- a family play space
- safer walking connections.

Wider precinct plans
We also want to share the wider Waiapu Precinct plans including:
- the proposed supermarket location
- future development sites for homes
- construction staging and timeline
- car park changes
- roading layout changes.

Paynes Lane
Paynes Lane (on the opposite side of Onehunga Mall) will be upgraded to provide:
- a safe, wider and improved walking connection between the Waiapu Precinct via Onehunga Mall to Paynes Lane and onto the Dress Smart retail precinct expansion.

- what other types of features could be included in the play space
- how you see yourself, your whanau (family) and friends using the public plazas
- is there anything else you would like to see in these green spaces
- if there is anything about the proposed layout of parking and streets that you want to tell us

You can have your say from Monday 12 February to Sunday 10 March 2024.
What happens next
Eke Panuku will collate and review the feedback to develop a final concept design.
After the concept design is approved by Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, the project will move into the detailed design phase.
The detailed design includes:
- materials
- surface coatings of play equipment
- construction details.
