This consultation on the proposed Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Plan and the Making Space for Water stormwater improvements closed on 31 August 2023. Thank you for having your say.
We received 2051 submissions in total:
- 1893 came through our online feedback form
- 36 came via our hard copy feedback form
- 39 came via email
- 83 came from our in-person events.
Key feedback themes
- Around half of the submissions said their community was affected by the extreme weather events in early 2023, and around a quarter experienced damage to their property, house or contents.
- Following the storms, around a third of people credited community spirit for helping them get through. About a quarter were self-reliant and got through either by themselves or with the help of family.
- Around a third of submissions expressed the need to increase stormwater maintenance, including clearing drains. Others called for upgrades or improvements to stormwater infrastructure, and for clear Civil Defence and Emergency Management response plans to be put in place.
- When commenting on how Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland can be more prepared for events like these in the future, a third mentioned the need for better planning for development, including flood mitigation measures.
- Nearly half of the feedback was supportive of the Making Space for Water programme and initiatives, although nearly a quarter wanted the funding to be found from somewhere other than increasing rates for Aucklanders.
