Planning for the future of our shoreline

We're preparing shoreline adaptation plans across the region, in partnership with mana whenua and local communities. To learn more about Shoreline Adaptation Plans watch this space for upcoming informative webinar sessions. Additionally you can check out our hazard maps identifying coastal hazard extents over the next 100 years along the Manukau South and Āwhitu coastlines in the documents section!

What shoreline adaptation plans are

Shoreline adaptation plans look at how we can adapt Auckland Council-owned land and assets to respond to coastal hazards and climate change over the next 100 years.

Recognising the environmental and landscape value of the shoreline, these plans also work to promote the preservation and restoration of the coastal environment for future generations.

How we develop strategies for shoreline adaptation plans

To help us develop strategies to manage these areas, we use:

  • coastal hazard data
  • climate change forecasts
  • values from mana whenua
  • input from infrastructure providers
  • input from the local community

Through this process, we aim to identify and document the best options for managing our coastal areas over the next century.

What we sought your feedback on:

To help us identify key areas of importance to the community, we wanted your thoughts on:

1) Auckland's southern coastal areas, stretching from Pahurehure Inlet in the east and Te Toro and Waipipi in the West including Waiuku and Karaka (see Manukau South map below).

2) Auckland's south western coastline, stretching from Karioitahi in the south, up to Wattle Bay, across to Big Bay and Grahams Beach (see Āwhitu map below).

The first round of public consultation on this project finished on the 14th October 2022, running for approximately three months. Close to 350 individuals provided feedback on what they value about the Manukau South and Āwhitu coastlines and how they utilize these coastal areas. Thank you to everyone who came along to our in person community engagement events and/ or provided feedback  via our online engagement tools.

Submissions included:

  • 145 comments left on our interactive digital Social Pinpoint map
  • 114 surveys via Social Pinpoint and AK Have Your Say
  • 5 emails with detailed coastal management recommendations and feedback

What happens next?

We have used what you have told us about where you play, what you love and how you value and use our coastal areas to draft community objectives for the Manukau South and Āwhitu coastline. These community objectives will help guide the way we manage the Manukau South and Āwhitu coastlines, and adapt to the impacts of coastal hazards and climate change into the future.
