Manukau South and Āwhitu Shoreline Adaptation Plans

Consultation for the Manukau South and Āwhitu Shoreline Adaptation Plans closed on the 14th October 2022. Thank you for having your say.

The Franklin Local Board endorsed the Awhitu SAP and conditionally endorsed the Manukau South SAP in April 2023. Both reports were then approved at the Parks, Environment and Planning Committee meeting on August 2023.

We received close to 350 pieces of feedback about the value of the Manukau South and Āwhitu coastlines and how these areas are used.

The feedback included:

  • 145 comments left on our interactive digital Social Pinpoint map
  • 114 completed feedback forms on Social Pinpoint and the AK Have Your Say
  • Five emails with coastal management recommendations and feedback

Main feedback themes

All feedback was analysed based on key themes and place based feedback.

The main feedback themes included:

  • protecting vulnerable and ecologically significant environments that support native flora and fauna
  • reducing the spread of mangroves around popular coastal access spots and bays
  • improving water quality from inlets and run-off
  • maintaining access to foreshores and coastal marine areas for recreational activities (walking, boating, picnicking etc)
  • improving and maintaining current facilities within parks, reserves, parking spaces and transport connections around the coast
  • general asset management issues (such as maintenance and safety) and improving wayfinding (signage)

Feedback also indicated a strong public concern for the impacts of:

  • coastal erosion
  • population growth
  • the ongoing maintenance of safe access to coastal environments (foreshores and Coastal Marine Areas)
