About the Proposed Regional Pest Management Plan
The proposed Regional Pest Management Plan was publicly notified for submissions in February-March 2018. The plan sets objectives and rules to manage pests in the region, and protect Auckland’s priority ecosystems, threatened species and primary production.
The plan relies on a variety of statutory and non-statutory actions to do this, including:
enforcement
delivery of pest control by council
education and behaviour change programmes.
Council approved the adoption of a new Regional Pest Management Plan on 12 March 2019.
The plan was publicly notified on 21 March 2019.
Appeals
Five appeals were lodged with the Environment Court after the plan was adopted.
These related to:
marine pests
region-wide land occupier responsibilities for pest plants ( two appeals)
pest control in the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area
red-eared slider turtles.
The appeal on red-eared sliders was withdrawn following Environment Court mediation. The other four appeals have now been resolved through Environment Court mediation and, in the case of marine pests, further consultation with affected parties. This process resulted in amendments and additions to several sections of the plan. All parts of the plan except marine sections were made operative on 10 November 2020. Marine sections will be made operative the week of 25 January 2021.
