About the Māori Land Rates Remission and Postponement Policy
Land is a taonga tuku iho (treasured heirloom) to Māori people.
Providing assistance with rates through our Māori Land Rates Remission and Postponement Policy is one of the ways that we support Māori landowners.
What we're proposing
We are looking to amend the Māori Land Rates Remission and Postponement Policy to provide a partial remission of rates to general title papakāinga, where that land is:
- protected from being sold out of Māori ownership
- for the sole use of hapū/iwi (tribe).
This recognises the similarities between these properties and papakāinga on Māori freehold land.
The proposed remission would apply a discount of up to 10 per cent of the rateable land value. This is similar to what is applied to Māori freehold land.

What happens if we don’t make the proposed changes
Under our existing policy, we only offer a remission for low income papakāinga households who cannot access government rates rebates due to the nature of their tenancy agreements (these are licence to occupy tenancies).
If we don’t make the proposed changes we will not be offer a general remission for papakāinga housing.
