We have updated the draft Manukau Sports Bowl Masterplan.
This follows our public consultation on a previous version of the plan, and further investigation of the community's recreation needs in relation to athletics.
About the masterplan
In April we asked for community feedback on a draft master plan for Manukau Sports Bowl. More than 750 people provided feedback on the plan.
Generally, people supported upgrading the park to make it a welcoming space for local families and we also heard considerable feedback on the desire for an athletics track.
Because of this, the project team have undertaken further analysis to better understand the future demand for an athletics track and field facility.
This included spatial planning to identify suitable locations, proximity to other facilities and other design considerations such as distance from residential properties to limit noise/light pollution for neighbours. During this process we confirmed that due to the size and shape required for such a facility, the ideal site in the future is where the greyhound racing track is currently located.
These findings, along with other recommended changes based on feedback from the community, have been incorporated into an updated draft master plan. This means greyhound racing has been removed from this draft master plan.
In the short term, the updated draft plan supports improving the basic park infrastructure including walking and cycling routes, improving safety, providing a splash pad and upgrading the playground to provide for a wider range of ages. Long-term projects include an athletics track and field facility, indoor courts and covering the velodrome.
