Key feedback themes

  • 77 people downloaded/viewed the proposal documentation to understand what was being proposed and why.
  • 89.6 per cent (155) lived within 5-10 minutes’ drive of Big Manly Beach.
  • 43 per cent of respondents supported the installation of bollards along the beachfront to protect the reserve, dunes and trees and provide additional shade. 56 per cent were opposed to the idea.
  • 41 per cent of respondents agreed with the proposal to install bollards which would result in limited parking along an approximately 330-metre stretch on The Esplanade. 55 per cent disagreed with this proposal.
  • We also received many comments which gave further insight into the community's views. You can read these in Attachment C on the Manly Bollards final report.

What happens next

  • Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has approved the installation of bollards and ground stabilisation materials at Manly beachfront, along The Esplanade.
  • The board has allowed staff to make minor changes to the exact placement of the bollards due to site topography and location of tree roots so long as placement is in general accordance with the final plan.
  • The board will ask Auckland Transport to investigate improvements to The Esplanade road surface to bring it up to an acceptable standard and to provide further parking in the road reserve.
