Local playgrounds for local communities

We recognise the importance of play and its contribution to the social development of children. The Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board is renewing the following playgrounds, and we want your help to plan the redevelopment of these play facilities.

What this project is about

Three playgrounds within the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board area are due to be renewed:

  • Te Ara Tāwhana/Moyle Park
  • Vickers Park
  • Kāmaka Park.

We would like your feedback on the play experiences in these local parks.

We want to make sure the playgrounds cater to a wide range of age groups and abilities.

What we want to improve

Te Ara Tāwhana/Moyle Park playground

Our studies show that the following activities should be improved for ages zero to 12 years:

  • accessible play for children with a range of abilities
  • jumping and spinning experiences.

The following activities have been missing from the playground for children aged nine to 12 years:

  • wheeled play – learn to ride facilities for trikes, bikes and scooters
  • sheltered gathering space.

Vickers Park playground

To meet the needs of children aged zero to 12 years, this playground needs to have:

  • accessible play for children with a range of abilities
  • crawling, rocking and spinning experiences
  • swinging, climbing and climbing experiences
  • sheltered seating and gathering space.

Kāmaka Park playground

This playground should have accessible pathways and sheltered seating. Play experiences for ages zero to 12 years should include:

  • accessible play for children with a range of abilities
  • crawling, rocking and spinning experiences
  • swinging, climbing and climbing experiences
  • sheltered seating and gathering space.

More information can be found on our Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Play Assessment.
