Local playgrounds for local communities

We are renewing the Lloyd Elsmore Park playground, skatepark and Rotary Centennial Bike Trail and would like your help. We know play is important to the social development of children and youth. We want to provide increased play provision for a broader range of age groups and abilities.

What this project is about

Signage at the entrance to Lloyd Elsmore Park

The playground next to the aquatic centre, the skatepark and the Rotary Centennial Bike Trail are no longer fit for purpose and do not meet the play needs of our children.

The Howick Local Board area's current playground network has significant provision gaps, including:

  • wheeled play
  • youth-targeted play facilities (13+ years)
  • accessible play facilities.

This means people need to travel to other parts of Auckland to access these facilities.

Types of play

Wheeled Play – this includes trike and bike learn to ride experiences for the littlies through to demanding skills courses for advanced riders. It also covers scooter and skate park facilities.

Youth facilities – generally, youth play facilities are focused on providing basketball courts. We would also like to provide:

  • challenging and demanding play equipment
  • hangout space
  • fitness and exercise facilities that support the play.

This areas would meet the exercise and social needs of youth.

Accessible play – enables children with or without disabilities to access and experience play without segregation. It also enables parents, siblings, caregivers and grandparents with disabilities to access the play space and supervise or take part in the fun.

More information can be found on our Play Service Assessment report.
