For many years, Jordan Park in Onehunga has been an empty patch of grass used as a parking space. We now want to redesign the park to provide a much-needed space for the growing community.
Background
With rapid growth in both population and high-density housing, many residents in Onehunga do not have access to their own private outdoor space.
As more people move into the area, Jordan Park has become an important shared space. For many people in this busy neighbourhood, the park acts as a shared 'backyard' and supports health and wellbeing.
During the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods in 2023, Jordan Park also played an important part in protecting the area from flooding by soaking up excess rainwater. We want the park to maintain this function while redesigning it to offer more to the community.
What we are proposing
We want to:
- make the park safer and easier to access with a new, wide path that connects Cameron Street directly to the park
- clear overgrown plants, bushes and paths to make it easier for people to see and be seen, so the park feels safer and more open
- remove parking access within Jordan Avenue to keep the area as a green space and safer for visitors
- make the park into a community 'backyard' - a place where people want to relax and play
- provide 'breathing space' in a highly populated area
- improve drainage at the park so it continues to protect the neighbourhood from flooding while staying usable for everyday activities and play
- make better use of natural shade from tree cover by adding areas for picnics and barbecues under the trees.
What we want to know
We want your feedback to help us understand what matters most to you and how you think Jordan Park can best serve the community.
We want to know which activities and features you would most like to enjoy at the park, such as:
- children's play area
- nature play like climbing logs and boulders
- areas to walk or kick a ball around
- climbing and exercise
- skating, scootering and cycling
- basketball half-court
- barbecues, picnic facilities and water fountains
- community events.
We also want to know what else you want us to include in the redesign of Jordan Park, such as:
- design that recognises our local iwi partners and tells the story of this land
- features that reflect Onehunga’s rail and industrial history
- features that recognise the kindergarten’s 100‑year history
- features that reflect the park’s bowling green history.
In addition, we want to know if you support the park becoming mostly car-free.
Your feedback will help us make decisions about the future of the park.
