Verdale Circle to Glendale Road (via Lucinda Place) shared path

This project is to design and construct a new shared path connection with amenity lighting between Verdale Circle and Lucinda Place as per the Waitākere Ranges Greenways Plan 2019.

We have identified two potential routes for the path to go.

The blue line is labelled Section B. This is our preferred route and is referred to as Option one below.

The purple line labelled Section C is an alternative route. This is referred to as Option two below.

Option one (preferred route) - Blue

The preferred route starts in the southwestern corner of Verdale Circle, opposite 17 Verdale Circle. It crosses the stream to 18 Lucinda Place.

Over land, the pathway will be constructed in concrete. The pedestrian bridge that crosses the stream will have a non-slip surface.

It will provide pedestrian and cycling access to the existing path within Glen Eden Picnic Ground. This route is shown as a blue line on the map below. A section of this existing path is planned to be widened to two metres as a part of the project.

This route will provide easy pedestrian and cycling access to:

• Glendale Road
• Glen Eden Town Centre
• Glen Eden Library
• Harold Moody Park and Duck Park which provide a recreation centre and hall, playground, sports field/open space, public toilets and courts.

This route also improves access to other parks such as Ceramco Park which has a small skate park.

This route is our preferred route as it does not impact the Lucinda Community Garden. It also utilises the wide strip of public land at 18 Lucinda Place.

It is both cost-effective and able to be constructed within a reasonable timeframe.

Although the project will require the removal of native plants on the side of the stream, there is space for replacement planting nearby.

Option two - Purple

The alternative route that has been identified starts at Olive Grove Park. It then runs through the Lucinda Community Garden and ends between 6 and 8 Lucinda Place.

Future paths in this area

A future project will investigate a potential path from Verdale Circle to Glendale Road via 300 West Coast Road. This is the G9 route in the Waitākere Ranges Greenways Plan 2019.

This will follow a similar route to the existing informal path being used at the edge of the Glen Eden Bowling Club.

Initial investigation of this route has found major challenges such as:

• private land ownership
• above and underground infrastructure
• an old landfill.

This route is important to local residents. There are future plans to continue the development of a shared path along this route when funding is available.

What happens next

• We will acknowledge feedback from each submitter when contact details are provided.
• We will collate feedback on each route and provide this to Waitākere Ranges Local Board in November 2022 for their consideration.
• We will tell submitters the local board's decision on the chosen G8 route.
• Staff will continue the project following direction from our local board.
