Thank you for having your say.

In 2019, we found the East Coast Bays area did not have a fenced dog park.

While there are many off-leash parks and reserves in the area, none are fenced. The nearest fenced dog park is at Sanders Reserve in Paremoremo.

We looked into possible sites at Sherwood Reserve and Deep Creek Reserve.

Feedback from nearby residents showed support for a public consultation about where the site for the dog park should be.

About the proposed dog park

The proposed dog park would be 3600 to 4000 square metres, depending on the site.

It would:

  • be fully fenced
  • allow dogs to socialise both on and off-leash.

This consultation was open from 11 March - 13 April 2026. A total of 149 pieces of feedback were received from the community.

  • 91.3% of responses were from within the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area
  • Remaining responses were mainly from other North Auckland local board areas

Feedback shows there is support for a fenced dog park in the area. People also told us that a fenced dog park could help reduce conflict in shared open spaces, including parks and beaches, by providing a dedicated place for dogs to exercise off-leash.

Sherwood Reserve received the highest level of support overall.

    • 49 per cent of responses supported Sherwood Reserve in some way.
    • 27.5 per cent of respondents selected Sherwood Reserve as their preferred location.
    • 18.8 per cent of respondents did not support a fenced dog park.
    • Four per cent selected “other”.

People who supported Sherwood Reserve said they liked:

    • the size of the reserve
    • easy access
    • available parking
    • existing shade
    • nearby toilets.
Concerns raised about Sherwood Reserve included:
    • drainage during winter
    • how a fence would look in the reserve
    • potential ecological impacts.
For Deep Creek Reserve, the most common reason people supported the site was that they lived nearby.Concerns raised about Deep Creek Reserve included:
    • traffic and parking
    • proximity to neighbouring homes
    • making sure there is still enough space for other park users
    • potential disruption to native bush and birds
    • drainage
    • noise.
People told us that a successful fenced dog park would need to be well-designed and comfortable for both dogs and people. Requested features included:
    • shelter or shade
    • seating
    • trees
    • a water fountain
    • a rubbish bin
    • agility equipment.

We will present your feedback to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board on 2 June 2026. The local board will then consider the feedback and decide on the next steps.
