Drone footage – view of reserve’s sports fields with Rangihoua maunga and Pūtiki Bay in the background.

Rangihoua Reserve and Onetangi Sports Park is an important facility for Waiheke Island. The recreation reserve contains a range of facilities including:

  • sports fields
  • a golf course
  • tennis courts
  • a museum and historical village
  • walking, cycling and horse-riding tracks.

Areas of the reserve are of high ecological importance, including the reserve’s watercourses and wetlands. The area is also of great significance to Ngāti Pāoa and other mana whenua.

In 2018, we asked for feedback on how you use the reserve and how you would like to use it in future. This information was combined with other research to create a draft management plan.

What we are proposing

The draft plan proposes a vision to guide the management of Rangihoua Reserve and Onetangi Sports Park over the next ten years:

“The mauri of Te Rangihoua and its taonga is protected and restored, while enabling the reserve to be the hub for play, active recreation and sport on Waiheke Island, providing wellbeing and enjoyment for Ngāti Pāoa and other mana whenua, Waiheke locals and the wider community”.

This vision is supported by management objectives and policies in the draft plan and will be delivered by working with Ngāti Pāoa and other mana whenua, recreation organisations, and community volunteers to implement a number of actions including:

  • bilingual signage and viewshaft protection
  • planting plan (including riparian margins)
  • review of occupancy arrangements
  • facility maintenance and pest removal
  • hazard reduction (flooding, fish barriers)
  • new spaces for organised sports and informal recreation
  • surveying wetland, fish, fauna and water quality.

To read these proposals in full, download a copy of the plan, or visit the Waiheke Library or Waiheke Island Service Centre to view a physical copy of the plan.
