Consultation has concluded

We have prepared a draft Aotea / Great Barrier Village Parks Activation Plan.

This plan relates to local parks in eight of the settlements on Aotea / Great Barrier Island. They are:

  • Claris
  • Tryphena
  • Port Fitzroy
  • Motairehe
  • Medlands
  • Okupu
  • Okiwi
  • Whangaparapara.

What we are proposing

We have suggested ways to improve the use of our local parks and to increase your satisfaction with them.

These improvements might involve providing or improving:

  • park furniture
  • shelters
  • solar-powered mobile phone recharging stations
  • picnic tables
  • tree swings.

The main priority of this project

The main priority we have proposed is a series of pou whenua (carved Māori posts).

These would be placed in parks across the island to recognise the relationship between Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai Ki Aotea, their ancestors and Aotea / Great Barrier Island.

Significant proposed actions

Parks and park assets along the Tryphena coast are vulnerable to erosion and coastal inundation. The draft plan recommends making some changes to the parks.

Mulberry Grove

  • re-route Shoal Bay Road away from the beach/coast and instead run it along the base of the cliff at Mulberry Grove. This will reconnect park land either side of the road and create a more cohesive park space.

Pah Beach

  • Reconfigure the car park to provide a larger grassed area for play and informal games

Gooseberry Flat

  • Relocate or decommission playground if continued erosion means it has to be moved
